Ship Medical Jobs
Ship
Physician
All modern cruise ships have an infirmary and at least one doctor
and nurse. Larger cruise ships may carry two doctors and several nurses.
There are two types of shipboard doctors. Those who work year round as a
career ship physician with a salary and vacation time. Then there are
those who work in exchange for a free cruise.
There
are no set standards for shipboard doctors, but in my research I have
noticed common minimum requirements for shipboard physicians.
They
are as follows:
-
Certification
in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
-
Current
valid medical license, international or American.
-
Ability
to converse in English.
-
Board
certification, similar international certification or equivalent
experience in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine
or General Practice plus emergency or critical care
experience.
-
Clinical
experience including minor surgical skills.
-
Medical
degree from a recognized college or university.
-
Ability
to diagnose and treat a broad range of medical conditions.
-
Ability
to immobilize simple fractures.
Ship
Nurse
There are nurses that work onboard a ship as a full-time career and
those who do so in exchange for free cruising. As with physicians, there
are no set standards for shipboard nurses, but the minimum requirements
are as follows: "
-
Registered
Nurse, licensed in Canada or the USA.
-
Fluent
in English.
-
Have
clinical experience in Emergency Medicine and the Intensive Care
Unit, Coronary Care Unit or Post-Anesthetic Recovery.
-
Current
certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
