Line Employment
Contract
Cruise
lines hire employees on a contractual basis. A typical cruise ship
employment contract has a duration of
approximately six months. After having successfully completed your
contract, you will receive an evaluation from your supervisor. The
contract can then be extended or renewed based on your job performance.
Generally the company will hire you for a certain number of months, but
in the contract fine print they usually have the right to shorten or
extend the employment contract by a few days or weeks.
In
general, the cruise line will arrange and pay for the transportation to
bring you to the ship. If you have to fly, they will fax or email you all the details for your flight.
Today, with electronic ticketing, all
you need is to show identification at the airport check-in counter. When
you arrive at the port city, the ship's agent will meet you at the
airport and drive you to the ship. Sometimes smaller cruise lines handle
transportation costs differently. They will advance you the cost of your
flight to meet the ship, and then deduct it later from your pay. Just
make sure you are clear on how the cruise line will handle your
transportation both to and from the ship.
